Run PHP 7 Alpha on Windows in 3 steps

Step 1 – Download the zip file from http://windows.php.net/qa/.  X86 is the 32 bit version of PHP and x64 is 64 bit version.  I recommend just using the non-thread safe version.

Step 2 – Extract the file to a location such as c:\PHP7\

Step 2.5 – If you dont have VCRUNTIME140.dll you can download it here http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9877240

Step 3 – Start playing around with PHP7 on windows

Using PHP7 on the Windows Command line

1. Click the windows start button and type cmd.exe and press enter

2. Change the current directory to the location of the extracted PHP7 zip file (i.e. cd c:\PHP7 )

3. Check the version of PHP php.exe -v

PHP 7.0.0alpha1 (cli) (built: Jun 12 2015 10:56:03)
Copyright (c) 1997-2015 The PHP Group
Zend Engine v3.0.0-dev, Copyright (c) 1998-2015 Zend Technologies

4. run a php script (i.e. php.exe c:\PHP7\scripts\test.php ).  Of course you would need to create the directory “scripts” and create the test.php file

Below is my test.php file that shows some of the new features of PHP 7

Using PHP7 as a stand-alone webserver

  1. Create a document root where you’ll serve up files such as c:\PHP7\scripts\ and create an php files you want in there such as test.php
  2. Run this command in cmd.exe c:\PHP7\php.exe -S localhost:8000 -t c:\PHP7\scripts\
  3. Open a browser and go to  http://localhost:8000/test.php
